Autopsy, post-mortem examination and anatomy teaching
In short
In German medical usage, “Sektion”, “Obduktion” and “Autopsie” refer to examination after death. Clinical autopsy particularly investigates disease and cause of death; forensic work addresses different official questions. An anatomical dissection course primarily teaches body structure.

What the setting is like
A post-mortem facility is a functional medical workspace with suitable tables, lighting, ventilation, hygiene and documentation arrangements. Access and procedures are controlled. This differs from dramatised film and television portrayals.
Students attending a demonstration receive instructions on registration, clothing, protection and behaviour. No private photographs or recordings without express permission. Dignity and confidentiality remain essential during teaching.
Different objectives
Clinical pathology may clarify disease progression and cause of death, supporting quality assurance. Forensic medicine may investigate circumstances or official questions. Legal prerequisites depend on context: there is no single consent rule covering every type of post-mortem.
What participants should expect
A demonstration has professional supervision and defined learning goals. Students normally do not need to buy autopsy tools. The institution specifies equipment and permitted activities; personal dissection kits are not simply brought along and used.
The experience may be emotionally unfamiliar. Ask questions early and tell staff if unwell. Whether attendance is available or mandatory depends on the actual teaching activity.
Read about anatomical dissection and hygiene. Freiburg's pathology and forensic teaching information provide institutional examples.
Questions
- Has every body in anatomy teaching undergone an autopsy?
- No. Donation for anatomical teaching and post-mortem investigation are different contexts.
- Can I attend spontaneously?
- No. Institutions control access. Some offer advance registration for specific student groups.
