How do I find the right lab coat size?

1 min read

In short

Use the size chart for the actual model. Measure chest, waist and hips, account for clothing underneath and check sleeves, shoulders and freedom of movement. Converting your T-shirt size directly is unreliable.

Choose a coat: Follow the material list; Move with the coat closed; Check the sleeve length.

Measure correctly

Use a flexible tape and stand naturally. Measure around the fullest chest, the natural waist and the fullest hips and seat. Keep the tape horizontal and close without tightening it. Assistance helps prevent twisting.

Check whether the chart gives body measurements or garment measurements. A coat's flat chest width is roughly half its circumference, not a body chest measurement. Do not add movement allowance twice if it is already included.

If your measurements fall into different sizes

The coat must close comfortably at every relevant point, not just across the chest. Ask the supplier using your measurements rather than ordering several speculative sizes. A student association fitting session is especially useful when the samples are the actual model being supplied.

Fit check before first use

  1. Wear the clothes you expect to have underneath.
  2. Close the coat fully: the front should neither strain nor hang excessively loose.
  3. Reach forward as if working at a bench; shoulders and back need room.
  4. Sit briefly and check the front remains comfortable.
  5. Check arm coverage and that cuffs do not extend into the work area.
  6. Check length against course requirements and the rest of your clothing.

Shrinkage and alterations

Cotton fabrics may change dimensions during laundering. A reliable shrinkage percentage requires manufacturer information. Do not simply buy two sizes larger. Altering sleeves or closures can affect intended performance; changes to protective clothing must remain compatible with its manufacturer's requirements.

Read about materials and care. Browse lab coats. The model's current chart and care label remain the essential references.

Questions

Does unisex mean men's sizing?
No. It describes intended users, not a standard measurement system. Use the model's chart.
Should the coat be very loose?
It needs movement allowance without excess fabric and sleeves interfering with work.
How should I check size before embroidery?
Confirm the model and fit first, ideally with a sample. Personalised goods may have different return conditions: read them before ordering.
